Initially established in 1958 as the Charles M. and Helen B. White Fellowship and Loan Fund as a faculty development program in the College of Engineering, the Whites changed the name and purpose of their fund on May 3, 1968 to support a lecture that focuses attention on the interactions of engineering technology with the sociological, economic, and environmental considerations of modern society. The lecturer is selected by a committee chaired by the Dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
