Charles “Charlie” Husar graduated from the University of Maryland with his bachelor’s degree in physics in 1971. He established the Charles T. Husar Endowment in December 2019 to support physics students in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS). Funds from the endowment provide fellowships and summer research and travel awards for physics students.
Husar was born in Vsetin, now the Czech Republic, where his family endured war conflict in their region and emigrated to the United States in search of political asylum. Husar graduated with honors from the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science in physics. With the endowment, Husar has given back to the university by supporting physics students and, when possible, those who demonstrate an interest in Czech Republic history, culture, language and traditions or to support efforts that enrich Czech culture in physics. Husar wants his fund to acknowledge the resilience and accomplishments of first-generation students and other bright minds in physics.
