Dr. Raju V. Datla, M.S. '72, Ph.D. '74, principal of the Hans R. Griem Physics Outreach Fund, Inc. is providing the lead commitment to establish the Hans R. Griem Endowed Program Support Fund in Physics at the University of Maryland, to honor the memory and legacy of his doctoral thesis advisor, esteemed mentor, and beloved Professor, Dr. Hans R. Griem. This endowment is intended to commemorate Dr. Griem's scientific contributions to physics, his love and affection for colleagues and students, and his devotion to his family.
Dr. Griem joined the UMD faculty in 1957 and advised over 40 doctoral students before he retired in 1994. He was the recipient of many honors and awards, including: Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), Guggenheim Fellow, the Humboldt and William F. Meggers Awards of the Optical Society. In 1991, he was awarded the James Clerk Maxwell Prize in Plasma Physics from the APS for "his numerous contributions to experimental plasma physics and spectroscopy...." Professor Griem was the first director of the Institutefor Research in Electronics and Applied Physics (IREAP) at UMD.
The purpose of the fund is to promote diversity in physics through outreach activities.
