Established, in honor of the life and legacy of the late Senator Joseph D. Tydings, the Joseph D. Tydings Endowed Scholarship in Government, Policy and Leadership to provide merit-based scholarships for undergraduate students in the Department of Government and Politics in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
Joseph Tydings was the son of former U.S. Senator Millard E. Tydings, for whom Millard E. Tydings Hall on the College Park campus is named. Joseph Tydings followed his father's footsteps, not only by attending Maryland, but by being involved in student government, where he served as student body president. He also helped start a chapter of the Young Democrats on campus. Though he was a lifelong Democrat, a key aspect of Sen. Tydings' legacy was that of a bipartisan leader who urged himself, his party and his colleagues of all political stripes to be fair, unified and effective. It is in this spirit, that his loved ones establish this scholarship, to support the next generation of leaders in this state and country.
