Dr. Daniel W. Lozier '79 established the Daniel W. Lozier Graduate Student Travel Endowment to support domestic or foreign conference travel for graduate students pursuing a doctoral degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Statistics, or another field in which the student's doctoral research program contains a substantial mathematical component.
Dr. Lozier’s impressive career as a mathematician with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) included extensive collaboration with Maryland’s Professor Emeritus Frank Olver (1924-2013), particularly their work on the Digital Library of Mathematical Functions at NIST. The Digital Library has become an important reference for the mathematical properties of special functions and for their computation. Dr. Lozier served as General Editor, and Dr. Olver served as Editor-in-Chief and Mathematics Editor. In creating this endowment, Dr. Lozier honors the memory of his esteemed colleague, Dr. Olver, and supports graduate student travel which will benefit the recipients long after receiving the award.
Speaking from experience, Dr. Lozier believes that “attending conferences is one of the most important things you can do to advance your career as a mathematician. You get to know others in your field from formal presentations and informal hallway discussions, and you get experience presenting your own work.” With your help, this endowment will provide graduate students with rich opportunities to advance their educational and professional careers through conference attendance and participation.
