The Department of Microbiology established the Dr. P. Arne Hansen Memorial Award in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences (CMNS) to recognize the outstanding academic endeavors of an undergraduate student in the Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics (CBMG) Honors Program.
The Dr. P. Arne Hansen Memorial Award honors beloved Professor P. Arne Hansen (1902-1972), who passed away shortly before his retirement after 27 years at the University of Maryland as a professor of microbiology. Throughout his life, Dr. P. Arne Hansen contributed significantly to the research of lactic acid bacteria and helped direct discoveries in microbial physiology and genetics with his students. Gifts to this fund will support and acknowledge a notable undergraduate student with a passion and drive for microbiology.
