The Joseph D. Mechanick, D.D.S. Maryland Promise Scholarship was established in November 2022 under the auspices of the Clark Challenge for the Maryland Promise Program. Dr. Jeffrey I. Mechanick '81, M.D., Chair of the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences Board of Visitors, and his family created this scholarship in memory of his father, Joseph D. "Jerry" Mechanick '60, D.D.S.
Jerry's professional passion was Dentistry, and he was known as a kind, compassionate, skilled dentist who built a strong practice. He graduated from the University of Maryland College Park with a B.S. in 1960 and from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery (now the University of Maryland School of Dentistry) with a D.D.S. in 1962. An honest gentleman, a former Marine, and a loyal brother, he was a man who always stuck to his convictions. He married the love of his life and lived a good life filled with sport, fun, and laughter that he shared with his family and friends. He enjoyed, loved, and appreciated the company of his children and grandchildren, was proud of all their accomplishments, and developed strong and meaningful ties with them. Jerry passed away peacefully and will be forever missed and lovingly remembered.
This fund provides need-based scholarships for undergraduate students who are residents of Maryland or the District of Columbia, with a preference for students in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences.
