The UMD Ham Radio Fund was established to provide support for the equipment and operating expenses for the Amateur Radio Association at the University of Maryland, which generally goes by the callsign W3EAX. The club has been in existence since before 1933 - making it one of the oldest college clubs in the country - and it moved into its current space (the "Shack") located in the South Campus Dining Hall around 1988. The Shack houses a variety of radios including a 2M repeater and has several of masts on the roof, some rising more than 100 feet above the ground. This fund will directly support the operations of the club including maintaining and upgrading the antennas and radios as well as helping provide educational programming, emergency preparedness and licensing exams, to the campus and surrounding community.
