Dr. Philip J. Provost Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics

Dolores Provost generously established the Dr. Philip J. Provost Endowed Fellowship in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics in November 2019 to honor the memory of Dr. Philip J. Provost ‘61. The fellowship provides merit-based support for graduate students conducting research with faculty in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences.

Dr. Philip J. Provost received his Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Maryland. Throughout his career as a professor and scientist, Dr. Provost invented 13 U.S. Patents related to hepatitis A, varicella viruses, and vaccines. He pioneered the characterization of the viral agent of human type A hepatitis, the first laboratory cultivation of hepatitis A virus, and the development of prototype vaccines leading to successful vaccines against human type A hepatitis. Dr. Provost also played a role in the development of the human vaccine against Chickenpox.
