Garson International Volunteer Endowment for Retired Seniors (GIVERS)

The Garson International Volunteer Endowment for Retired Seniors (GIVERS) is an updated name and mission for a fund, RSVP International, that was established by Arthur and Patricia Garson in 1984 in New York City, and which received several City commendations. In 2000, the Board of RSVPI transferred the program to the University of Maryland Center on Aging.

Today, housed at the University of Maryland School of Public Health (SPH), GIVERS’ mission is to support the new Global Health Initiative and to develop and promote international volunteer opportunities for senior citizens in their own countries.  Among its many programs to improve global health, the School of Public Health at the University of Maryland engages students in researching seniors' attitudes and behaviors toward volunteerism in countries around the world. The SPH then implements sustainable programs and other interventions that capitalize on the research. Funds from this GIVERS endowment are used to offset expenses related to these efforts.
