Professor Emeritus of Computer Science, Dr. Laveen Kanal, received his B.S.E.E and M.S.E.E in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. His long and distinguished career as an educator, technology entrepreneur, and research & development executive in the industry includes over 25 years of teaching in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland (UMD). Dr. Kanal has received many honors, including the Darnell/Kanal Professorship in Computer Science at UMD, established by quantitative investment professional Christopher Darnell. Dr. Kanal benefitted from the good fortune of a top-tier higher education and successful career. He created the Professor Laveen N. Kanal Maryland Promise Scholarship to provide undergraduates in the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences from underserved communities in Maryland and the District of Columbia access to an excellent education and rewarding career opportunities.
