Michael Brin, a professor emeritus of mathematics who joined the UMD faculty in 1980 and retired in 2011, established the Michael Brin Endowed Chair in Mathematics in April 2005 to support the holder of the Michael Brin Chair in Mathematics. Only truly exceptional research mathematicians shall be appointed to the Michael Brin Chair in Mathematics, and these appointments are offered to candidates outside the university. Holders are chosen strictly based on demonstrated mathematical ability, achievement, potential, and leadership in mathematical research and education or a vital field at the heart of mathematics.
Vadim Kaloshin, its inaugural holder, is the Michael Brin Endowed Chair in Mathematics. Kaloshin is known for his contributions to dynamical systems. Among the highlights of his research and accomplishments, Kaloshin was nominated to the European Academy of Sciences in February 2021.
