Donor Recognition Societies

The University of Maryland’s central donor recognition societies celebrate the impact of sustained giving on the university. Philanthropy supports our students, enhances academic excellence, and attracts and retains great faculty. Whether you give every year, demonstrate a lifetime of generosity, or include the university in your charitable estate or financial plans, the University of Maryland honors and recognizes your commitment.

We invite you to join our highly esteemed communities of donors. Your generosity will make a lasting impact on Maryland students, preparing them for lifelong success. We know the success of our students also uplifts our families and communities, our state, our nation and our world. Your gift will help equip our talented students with the knowledge and skills to move fearlessly forward and solve the grand challenges of our time.

Flagship Society

The Flagship Society acknowledges donors whose lifetime contributions have reached $250,000 or more. These visionary supporters provide endowments for scholarships, professorships and innovative programs; support new and renovated facilities; and make other strategic investments that have helped transform Maryland into an institution of global distinction.

1856 Society

Named in honor of the University of Maryland's founding year, the 1856 Society recognizes Maryland's most generous benefactors and the foundation their philanthropy provides for our university. Supporters who make a lifetime commitment of $1 million or more, or a planned gift of $5 million or more, ensure that Maryland will continue its ascent as a preeminent public research institution for generations to come.

Founders Legacy Society

The Founders Legacy Society honors those who generously support the university through their estate or financial plans, or other planned gift arrangements. These forward-thinking donors demonstrate their steadfast commitment to future generations at Maryland and help to ensure the university continues to be a world-class institution for teaching, research and public service. Donors who notify the university of a planned gift to benefit Maryland, regardless of amount, are recognized in the Founders Legacy Society.
