C. James Dowden Current-Use Support Fund in Government and Politics

C. James Dowden passed away on March 23, 2021. Jim attended the University of Maryland College Park campus after graduating from Dundalk Senior High in 1961; he graduated from the University of Maryland College Park in 1965 with a B.A. degree in Government and Politics. His wife Sue also attended U of MD at the same time and the two were married on September 4, 1965, at the University’s small chapel.

After graduation Jim worked on campus as Associate Director of the Maryland Municipal League, which was then located in Tydings Hall. After leaving the League, Jim went on to direct professional associations including the Community Associations Institute (CAI) and National Association of Regional Councils (NARC), for which he directed conferences and lobbied successfully for federal and state legislation. In the mid-90s, Jim established his own association management company directing the conferences, continuing education, and membership for many diverse groups.

During his undergraduate time at the College Park campus, Jim worked in the main dining hall, at the McKeldin Library, and as a residence hall assistant. He was always grateful for the financial support he received while pursuing his education. In his memory, the C. James Dowden Student Support Fund for Government and Politics will allow future students to pursue their goals as Government and Politics majors while knowing they are supported financially.
