Balloon Payload Program

The UMD Balloon Payload Program launches high altitude balloons with payloads attached to collect scientific data or test out engineering concepts. The balloons routinely travel to altitudes greater than 100,000 feet. The group conducts an average of three to four launches a semester to test these payloads. They also conduct a variety of outreach projects with different schools and student groups.  The group will also participate in the 2023-2024 Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project as leaders for 8 college teams to be able to launch weather balloons that will obtain atmospheric data and video footage of interest to NASA during each eclipse.
