The Department of Biology at the University of Maryland is one of the best integrative biology departments in the country. Evolution provides the unifying theme for the department, with research foci in biophysics, sensory neuroscience, developmental biology, evolutionary genetics, ecology, and conservation biology. Our faculty, students, and postdoctoral scholars are competitive with the best universities in terms of research funding and productivity. We use diverse model organisms and modern approaches to gain the widest possible perspectives on biological organization and function from molecules to ecosystems and employ innovative pedagogies of active learning and engagement to provide a thoroughly modern and engaging curriculum that prepares our students for careers in all areas of the life sciences.
