Since 1971, the Nyumburu Cultural Center at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) has stood as a beacon of hope, support, and pride for the Black community of UMCP and the surrounding area. The Nyumburu Cultural Center also has the distinction of being one of the oldest Black cultural centers in the nation.
The Center continues its legacy of advancing the academic success of students through academic support, cultural awareness and retention programs. Outlets like the Black Male Initiative, Black Explosion Newspaper, Juke Joint (Open Mic), Leadership Series, Miss Unity Scholarship Pageant, The Maryland Gospel Choir and NewsBreak are among the numerous offerings. Over fifty years, 2.5 million+ students, alums and community members (50,000+ annually) have been directly impacted by programming which supports intellectual discourse on issues affecting the campus community, the nation, and the world.
The 50th Anniversary is the perfect opportunity to positively impact African American and African diaspora students on the University of Maryland campus. Event sponsorship will enable the Nyumburu Cultural Center to support students through scholarships, internship and externship opportunities, and provide a forum for marginalized voices to be heard.
